UK, Switzerland, EU impose sanctions—but not the US? ESCU Monitoring #18

On May 20, the Council of the European Union adopted its 17th package of sanctions against Russia. This package encompasses four distinct EU sanctions regimes: in response to actions that undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the use of chemical weapons, hybrid activities, and human rights violations. The sanctions list includes 75 individuals and entities, as well as 30 intermediary companies that facilitated sanctions evasion. Notably, for the first time, restrictions have been imposed on pro-Russian bloggers based in Germany.

The United Kingdom, following the EU’s lead, announced a comprehensive set of sanctions targeting key Russian financial institutions, including the Deposit Insurance Agency and the St. Petersburg Stock Exchange. These entities are involved in supporting Russia’s war efforts through export transactions, financing, and digital infrastructure.

Switzerland has aligned itself with the EU’s 16th sanctions package, implementing measures that prohibit the export of certain goods, including chromium ores and software for the energy sector, and restricting trade with designated Russian ports and airports.

And what about the United States? German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed hope that the US would step up pressure on Russia to achieve an immediate ceasefire in its war against Ukraine, as reported by The Guardian.
