“Effective sanctions help save lives, as they reduce the aggressor’s resource potential and shorten the duration of the war,” emphasized Ilona Khmeleva during the meeting of the EU–Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee in Brussels.

At the same time, the Secretary of the ESCU noted that Russia increasingly combines cyberattacks with conventional weapons. And although EU sanctions have already significantly complicated the production of ammunition, they remain insufficiently effective and outdated when it comes to hybrid attacks.

“If we ignore this growing force today, tomorrow cyberattacks will cause even more severe destruction, and we will have no effective instruments of deterrence or response. Europe, together with its allies, must introduce new mechanisms — including effective cyber sanctions — that will ensure digital security for EU citizens and member states,” the Secretary added.
