"Business Plays a Key Role in the Implementation of Sanctions," — Ilona Khmeleva, Secretary of the Economic Security Council of Ukraine

On October 11, a meeting of the Special Working Group on Sanctions against Russia, established by the International Sanctions and Export Control Society (ISECS-RWG), took place under the chairmanship of Ilona Khmeleva, Secretary of the Economic Security Council of Ukraine. During the meeting, new G7 and GECC recommendations for businesses were discussed, aimed at limiting Russia's access to critical foreign technologies. Retired FBI Special Agent Rico Falsone also joined the discussion.

Participants focused on the list of items at heightened risk of unlawful importation to Russia, "red flag" indicators of potential sanctions evasion, and best practices for enhanced due diligence that could be implemented by companies in the near future.

"In today’s interconnected world, business plays a key role in implementing sanctions and export controls. Companies should not stand aside — they have real opportunities to drive positive changes and uphold global security. I hope that members of the ISECS-RWG will become ambassadors of this approach," said Ilona Khmeleva.

The Secretary of the Economic Security Council of Ukraine also emphasized that with robust due diligence, businesses can not only safeguard their reputation but also make a significant contribution to ensuring peace and security globally, which would become an additional advantage in the highly competitive market.

Last week, the G7, together with the Global Export Control Coalition (GECC), issued recommendations for industries to limit Russia's access to critical foreign technologies. The ESCU highlighted the importance of this step in countering sanctions evasion. However, we also stressed the need for effective mechanisms to penalize companies that violate established regulations.
